Buying a boat and setting sail is a dream of many. To keep surprises to a minimum, I recommend independent consulting for the most important systems.
Be it for the engine, sails, electrics and technology.
A boat is like a small village, you have to take care of everything yourself.
Generate and store energy, produce and store water and dispose it. Take care about the rig, engine and all other little bits.
The big difference to traveling on land, however, is that you always have to take care of something. Except in ports, you always have to take care of something. Be it weather, anchor, food, navigation or your technical equipment.
If you want to experience more besides the boat, I recommend less, simpler, smaller, but right.
A consultation usually costs a fraction of a repair or customization.
In terms of safety, comfort and cost/benefit considerations, preparation is a major, usually costly and time-consuming factor for everyone.
I am convinced that individual consulting is therefore the be-all and end-all. If only to answer the last 2 questions.
It is equally important to be able to discuss your own experiences and findings. I am happy to share with you my experience from 15 years as a yacht technician and 5 years of long-distance sailing including technician with over 30,000 nautical miles.
